Junet downplays rift with Sifuna, says party decisions must prevail
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has played down reports of a fallout between him and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
Speaking on the night of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, during an interview with a local TV station, Junet described their differences as normal disagreements within a political party.
The Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) said the reported tensions were being exaggerated, insisting that there was nothing personal between the two leaders.
“It is nothing serious. It is just a divergence of opinions and beliefs. Nothing personal,” Junet said.

Internal disagreements
He further emphasized that internal disagreements are common in political parties and should not be misconstrued as hostility or division, maintaining that, despite differing views, party decisions remain paramount.
“The decisions of the party will prevail. We can have our own differences, but when the party makes a decision, and that is what Baba taught us, we will all have to abide by it,” he explained.
Sifuna-Junet war of words
There has been a push and pull between Sifuna and Junet within the ODM party. Sifuna has openly opposed the direction ODM appears to be taking ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly any potential partnership with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Junet, on the other hand, appears supportive of such a move, a disagreement that has fuelled their war of words.
Early January 2026, Sifuna launched a fierce attack on Junet during the burial of Alice Wangari Gakuya in Makomboki, Murang’a County. He challenged Junet’s recent criticism of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s financial support for the Azimio campaign.
Sifuna reminded the crowd of Mount Kenya’s critical role in past elections, accusing Junet of mismanaging the 2022 Azimio agent’s money.
“Unajua watu wengi wamesahau mlima Kenya, kwa mara ya kwanza baba Raila Odinga alizua kura zaidi ya milioni moja. Na ndio maana mliona nikipigia Uhuru Kenyatta asante kwa sababu alitusaidia. Mlitusukuma lakini alitusaidia,” he said.
“Lakini saa hii kuna mashenzi mmoja, ametambua kwamba kuna ubaya ya pesa ya Uhuru Kenyatta. Nataka niulize Junet: ‘Wewe Junet, pesa ya Uhuru ilianza kuwa mbaya siku gani?”
ODM party leader Oburu Odinga has since stepped in to manage the fallout, holding separate meetings with the two leaders at his office.
