Oburu meets Sifuna amid ouster push and ODM cracks
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga held a meeting with embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
ODM has stated that the meeting held at the party leader’s office, coming amid mounting calls to have the SG ousted from his position, focused on strengthening the party organs.
Party unity
“Secretary General Sen. @edwinsifuna this morning called on Party Leader @DrOburu_Oginga at his office in Nairobi. Their meeting centred on the unity and the growth of the party… #TukoTayari,” the ODM statement read.

The developments follow calls to oust Sifuna, engineered by Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, which were put on hold after the party’s top organs intervened and proposed an in-house approach.
Heightened calls for Sifuna’s ouster
Oketch had, on Monday, January 5, 2026, authored a letter initiating the removal process against the Nairobi Senator from the helm of the party.
Oketch, however, confirmed that he was prevailed upon to withdraw the plans to give room for dialogue and party structures to resolve the matter.

Oketch in particular faulted Sifuna’s presence in Murang’a during the funeral of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya’s mother in the company of Gachagua, stating that the development had prompted him to begin plans to initiate an ouster motion against the outspoken senator.
The party’s deputy vice chairperson, Otiende Amollo, had similarly implored the leadership to intervene in the impasse among sections of party members at loggerheads.
In a statement on Monday, January 5, 2026, Amollo addressed the ongoing war of words between National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed and Sifuna, warning that the divisions risked plunging the party into more turmoil and disarray.
“We call upon the party’s elected leadership and wider membership to uphold the tenets of unity and camaraderie espoused by the late Raila. We also encourage the party leader to call for an internal session to put an end to the spats,” he said.
Attention now shifts to the party’s Central Management Committee (CMC), which is set to convene during the week to deliberate on his removal.
