JB Muturi defends Uhuru Kenyatta amid Kenya’s Kwanza attacks
Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has come out to defend retired President Uhuru Kenyatta from what he termed as sustained attacks by Kenya Kwanza politicians.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Monday, May 4, 2026, the outspoken former attorney general called for an immediate end to what he described as reckless and unnecessary attacks on the former head of state.
“The sustained and increasingly hostile attacks directed at Rtd President Uhuru Kenyatta by leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration must come to an immediate end,” Muturi stated.
Muturi said the continued criticism of Uhuru represents a direct affront to constitutional democracy and amounts to a calculated attempt to silence him and curtail his political rights, which are guaranteed to every Kenyan.

He further faulted some Kenya Kwanza leaders for what he termed a narrow and misguided framing of the issue, arguing that they have reduced it to a purely domestic political matter. According to him, such arguments reflect a weak understanding of global democratic practices.
Muturi noted that across Africa and the world, retired leaders continue to play active roles in national and global affairs. He cited leaders such as Jakaya Kikwete, Bakili Muluzi, Jacob Zuma, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and others, saying that Uhuru Kenyatta is equally entitled to the same democratic space.
He urged Kenya Kwanza leaders to desist from what he termed aspolitical intolerance, adding that no political formation has the right to dictate the leadership, alliances, or internal affairs of another.
Muturi also accused unnamed state actors of orchestrating the attacks, calling on President William Ruto to rein in his allies and restore order within his ranks. He insisted that Uhuru should not be scapegoated for the failures of the current administration.
He further cited Article 151(3) of the Constitution, arguing that it protects the benefits and privileges of a retired president from being altered to their disadvantage, warning that any attempt to undermine it would be unconstitutional and void.
Muturi concluded by stating that Kenya deserves mature, issue-based politics and warned against what he termed asintimidation, propaganda, and political vendetta, insisting that the rights of retired leaders must be respected within Kenya’s democratic framework.
Jubilee party’s statement

These remarks were made by the Jubilee Party Secretary General, Montalel Ole Kenta, who was issuing a presser on behalf of the party at their headquarters on Monday, May 4, 2026, where all top party officials were present.
“I would like to challenge President William Ruto to come out himself and address this issue himself instead of using sidekicks. If he has any issue with Uhuru’s activities, let him come out as a man and address it himself.”
Gachagua defends Uhuru

On the other side, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has also come out to defend Uhuru Kenyatta, saying that it is his singular duty to defend the former head of state from any attack.
He also took a swipe at politicians threatening to strip him of his retirement perks, saying that if they move ahead to do so, once they take over power, they will reinstate them in full as required.
