Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has asked former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to move on after his impeachment.

Speaking in Kakamega County on January 21, 2025, during President William Ruto’s development tour in the region, Mudavadi said that by the law, after Gachagua’s ouster, he can not hold any public office even as a nyumba kumi elder.

Comparing the current situation of the former Nairobi and Kiambu governors who were impeached, the Prime CS noted that Gachagua, just like Mike Sonko and Ferdinand Waitutu, who have been left without holding any position in the public sector after their removal from office, will be unable to run for any political seat; neither will he be appointed to hold any public office.

He further advised the second deputy president to stop mourning and move on from his impeachment, adding that Kenyans are tired of listening to him mourning daily.

Sheria inasema hivi: kama wewe umekuwa impeached, hauwezi kushika kazi ya umma; you cannot have public office; hata nyumba kumi hautapata.

Yule aliyekuwa governor wa Nairobi alipokuwa impeached hakusonga tena, yule aliyekuwa Kiambu alipokuwa impeached hakusonga tena. If somebody was mourning, he has finished the mourning; the mourning period is over. Kenya must move on. Kenya is not there to listen to you mourning every other day. We must move on, and we must develop the country, and that is where President William Ruto is taking us,” Mudavadi said.

In addition, Mudavadi urged Kakamega residents not to be swayed by a leader who will never hold any public office.

Mimi nataka kuambia watu wa eneo hili mchukue sheria muitafakari vizuri kwa sababu hatutaki kupotoshwa na mtu ambaye na wala hatawai kuwa na nafasi yakuwa na public office. Let us not waste our time; let us move forward,” he added.

Gachagua’s outburst

After his impeachment, Gachagua has been criticising President Ruto and his administration for failing to address the issues affecting Kenyans, among other things.

His latest outburst was on Sunday, January 19, 2025, during a church service at PCEA Emmanuel Matanya, Waguthiru Parish, in Laikipia County, when he launched a scathing attack on Ruto, accusing him of micromanaging political affairs and scripting speeches for political leaders.

He claimed that while he served as Ruto’s deputy, the president often dictated what he should say publicly, including controversial shareholder government remarks.

According to Gachagua, Ruto’s instructions caused him to make statements that alienated him from the Kenyan public. He recounted being directed to criticize opposition leader Raila Odinga during their earlier disputes, only to later witness Ruto reconciling with Raila.

“Ukiona wabunge wakiongea, Ruto ndiye amewatuma. Si mimi nilikuwa na yeye, alikuwa aniniandikia sema ii. Nikasema siku tatu nikaona huyu mtu anataka kunikosanisha na Wakenya. Si mliona siku za kwanza vile nilikuwa nasema. Hii maneno ya shareholding ni yeye alikuwa ameniambia niambie Wakenya hii serikali ni ya shares,” Gachagua stated.
