CBK starts releasing new banknotes for smaller denominations
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced that it is in the process of releasing new banknotes for smaller denominations.
In a statement on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, CBK announced that the old banknotes will remain in circulation as legal tenders as issued in 2019.
The new banknotes being released entail the Ksh50, Ksh100, Ksh200 and Ksh500 denominations.
As announced in August 2024, the notes will bear the signature of the governor of the Central Bank of Kenya Dr Kamau Thugge, the signature of the Principal Secretary of the National Treasury Dr Chris Kiptoo, the year of print (2024) and new security threads with colour-changing effects that are specific to each denomination
“The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) on August 6, 2024, informed the public of the changes made in the denominations of Kenyan currency banknotes. The Bank also communicated that the release of the banknotes had commenced with that of Ksh1,000,” CBK stated.
“We wish to update the public that the release of Ksh50, Ksh100, Ksh200 and Ksh500 denominations is now in progress. Other than the changes highlighted above, all other features of the banknotes remain the same as those of the series issued in 2019. Details of the banknotes are available on the Bank’s website www.centralbank.go.ke,” CBK added.
“We also would like to draw to the public’s attention that all other banknotes currently in circulation remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the released banknotes.”
