Defending FKF-Women Premier League Champions, Vihiga Queens FC, overcame an early setback to secure a 3-1 victory over newcomers Kibera Soccer FC at Nairobi’s Camp Toyoyo Grounds on Saturday.
The new kids on the block, Kibera Soccer FC, stunned the favourites with an opening goal from forward Nancy Atako in under a minute. However, Vihiga Queens, under the guidance of Coach Boniface Nyamunyamu, patiently turned the game around with clinical finesse and experience. Tumaini Waliaula had a brace in the 14th and 84th minute taking advantage of the Kibera team’s slackness in defense to punish them with clinical finesse. Captain and long-serving Vihiga player Janet Moraa also weighed in with her own in the 25th minute of play as the home team slowly disintegrated with the quick and efficient play by the Champions.
In another intense match, Kenya Police Bullets= dominated Bungoma Queens FC with a convincing 5-2 win at the Police Sacco Stadium in South-B, Nairobi.
Puren Alukwe’s remarkable hattrick was the toast of the law enforcers in a display of courage and sharpness.
Her goals came in the 2nd,18th and 50th minute and was assisted by Winnie Gwatenda and Lucy Kwekwe to ensure Police began their campaign on a high. The consolation goals from the opponents came courtesy of an own goal by the defense after a mix-up and Eunice Alivitza in the latter stages of the match.
Meanwhile, Ulinzi Starlets who finished third in the last campaign, also had a good weekend outing following a comfortable 3-0 win over lowly Wadadia.
Veteran Neddy Akoth alongside the duo of Lavender Akinyi and Lucy Nato ensured that Wadadia based in Western Kenya simply could not cope. Starlets will look to keep away the pace tag and fight for the title this time around given its game brilliance.
In another showdown, Nakuru City Queens beat Zetech Sparks 2-1 with the latter taking the lead inside 41 minutes through Sherril Chaviha. The away team had to fight back with commitment in Ruiru to come back to the game and were rewarded following two goals in the space of three minutes via Lenah Wanjala (61st minute) and Merceline Wafula (64th minute) in what was a titanic battle, particularly in protecting the small margin while also Queens attempting to get more goals on the board.
