Vihiga Queens on the rampage as Women Premier League returns
Defending Champions Vihiga Queens FC thrashed Wadadia FC 6-0 on Sunday to underscore their renewed title ambitions in the FKF-Women Premier League that resumed after Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The result means Queens have opened a five-point gap at the apex of the standings as they now sit on 24 points from 10 matches played. Emily Moranga hit a first half hat-trick (17th, 37th, 39th minutes) in the first half to completely shudder hopes for the opponent’s mental recovery. Moranga’s finesse coupled with the players’ movement on and off the ball was always a threat to the opposing side who found it hard to pin her down.
Other goals came via Tumaini Waliaula in the 10th minute, Vivian Akinyi (61) and Emily Moraa (62) added to the superiority of the Western based giants who are yet to lose a match in this campaign and have an impressive +16 goal difference. To the contrary, Wadadia’s up and down season sees them in fifth place with 12 points after posting three wins in 10 matches played.
Meanwhile at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County, Kibera Women saw off hosts Soccer Assassins FC 3-2 in a thrilling game that was end-to-end for most of the part. Robi Maximilla opened the account for Kibera inside 10 minutes after neat interplay in the 18-yard box led to a lapse in defense to which she capitalized on. Charity Midewa was to equalise in the 15th minute for Assassins but a minute later star forward Nancy Atako of Kibera had other ideas as she pounced on a loose ball to send her bench to ecstatic joy.
The madness did not end there because Atako of Kibera netted a neat penalty but only after some comical defending of her own teammate ended in an own goal to the opponents. It was one of the few games in the season whereby not a single booking was made by the match officials. The result puts Kibera Soccer on 18 points and fourth on the log while Assassins are 10th in the table with eight points albeit with a match in hand.
Elsewhere, Kenya Police Bullets FC in second place were 4-2 winners over Bunyore Starlets in a match played at Police Sacco Stadium in South-C, Nairobi. The goal fest saw Police at touching distance in second place with 18 points albeit with a match in hand while Starlets are in ninth place with a similar number of points.
