Athletics Kenya (AK) has announced that the national trials for the World U 20 Athletics Championships will take place from June 26-28 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The trials are open to athletes under the age of 20, with strict measures in place to ensure proper vetting of participants.

According to AK, participants must bring the following documents for verification on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the Nyayo National Stadium: original birth certificate, original passport, student identification, national identification card (if applicable), a release letter from their school, and parental consent.

These documents are crucial for ensuring the eligibility of the athletes competing for a spot in the national team.

“The top two finishers in each category of competition will be selected to represent Kenya at the World Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru, scheduled for August 27-31,” AK announced.

However, the selected athletes must also meet the entry qualification standards set by World Athletics for their respective disciplines.

Athletics Kenya is determined to field a strong team that will surpass the achievements of the last edition of the championships held in Cali, Colombia, where Kenya won 10 medals—three gold, three silver, and four bronze.

To achieve this, AK has been working closely with the Ministry of Sports through the Sports Arts and Social Development Fund (SASDF) to establish and manage training camps across the country.

These camps, held during school holidays, focus on identifying, nurturing, and developing young talent to prepare them for international competition.

“This initiative, operational since 2016, has produced several young athletes who have achieved international success, including women’s 10,000m world record holder Beatrice Chebet, mile world record holder Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and World Under 20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot,” AK stated.

With these preparations in place, the federation is confident in the competitiveness of the upcoming national trials for the World Under 20 Championships.

The 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships, also known as the World Junior Championships, will be held in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to 31, 2024.

Initially, Lima had withdrawn as the host city due to political instability, social unrest, and natural disasters. However, the city was reinstated as the host on August 14, 2023, after stabilizing these issues.
