“We cannot afford to get into a comfort zone’ – Coach Okere warns title-chasing Tusker
Tusker FC coach Charles Okere has warned his charges against complacency as the team mounts a quest for the Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.
The Brewers have dominated the large spell of the season, culminating in a joint top finish as the league entered its halfway mark on Sunday, 26, 2025.
And with perennial champions Gor Mahia showing little intent of defending their title thus far, the Brewers are widely tipped to make a stab for their 14th league title this summer.
“This league is a marathon. We have a game against KCB next; they are a tough opponent. Every game is final for us. We are here to put in the work. We cannot afford to get into a comfort zone,” Okere said as quoted by the club media site.
The coach was elated with his boys’ input during Sunday’s solitary-goal victory over Sofapaka.
“It was tough playing at 1:00 pm on an artificial turf, but our players stuck to the plan, and it came out well. The first half was scrappy. We managed to score through a set-piece goal. Getting a clean sheet against Ulinzi Stars is a huge plus for our team,” Okere said.
The coach has further revealed their intentions to reverse the team’s worrying trend of conceding. The Brewers are among the sides with poor defensive records, with 22 goals shipped in from 18 games.
Posta Rangers carries the league’s worst defensive record with 27 goals conceded.
“We have been working on our conceding rate. The clean sheet opens for the second leg against a team like Ulinzi. It’s a motivation for us all. We have conceded too much in the first half, and we have been working to counter this,” he said.
Tusker were last crowned as the league champion in the 2022 season and have failed to lift the trophy since, finishing behind Gor in two consecutive seasons.
