President William Ruto has officially commissioned the newly completed Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, describing the Ksh3.8 billion infrastructure project as a major step toward transforming Nairobi into a modern and globally competitive city.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Nairobi on Monday, June 29, 2026, Ruto said the project is designed to remove one of the capital city’s most persistent traffic bottlenecks that has for years slowed economic activity and frustrated commuters.

“We are investing in productivity and competitiveness for our capital city. This Kenya shilling 3.8 billion project removes one of the most persistent traffic bottlenecks by separating traffic, improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike,” Ruto said.

Government targets Nairobi traffic bottlenecks

The Head of State noted that traffic congestion in Nairobi has for years imposed a heavy economic burden by delaying workers, increasing transport costs and slowing the movement of goods across key commercial corridors.

He said modern infrastructure must go beyond simply connecting roads and instead directly support economic growth and improve the quality of life for citizens.

“Reduced travel time, lower transport costs, improved road safety and making cities work better for everyone. This is what modern infrastructure should do,” he stated.

Multi-billion road projects underway

Ruto revealed that the Ngong flyover project is part of a wider transport transformation agenda currently underway across Nairobi, with several major road projects already progressing.

Among them is the Ksh3 billion Upper Hill–Kenyatta Avenue Flyover project, now 60 per cent complete, and the Ksh1.6 billion upgrade of State House Road aimed at improving another strategic transport corridor.

“At the same time, we are building access roads to Talanta Sports City through a Ksh3.9 billion investment, ensuring Kenya is ready to host AFCON with world-class infrastructure,” he said.

Smart transport system planned

The President further announced the rollout of Nairobi’s intelligent transport system, a multi-phase smart mobility programme expected to manage traffic flow in over 210 junctions across the city.

“These are not simply investments in roads. They are investments in economic growth, productivity, competitiveness and a better quality of life. We will continue building infrastructure that supports enterprise, attracts investment and prepares Nairobi for the future,” Ruto added.
