WCQ: Gabon win to hand Harambee Stars’ dream big blow at Nyayo Stadium

Kenya’s dream to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals has been dealt a big blow after a 2-1 loss to Gabon at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, 2024.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice, and Michael Olunga scored Kenya’s only goal in an encounter witnessed by a massive crowd.
The loss came after Harambee Stars picked up a point in a spirited fight against Gambia in the last game that ended in a 3-3 draw.
Despite enjoying massive support from the crowd and in the presence of President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Harambee Stars were unable to register a positive outcome against Gabon.
This is the second game that the new coach, Benni McCarthy, oversaw, and the loss is also a big blow to his individual ambition of leading Kenya to the global showpiece.
Meanwhile, Aubameyang beat Kenya’s goalkeeper Ian Otieno to score the opening goal in the 16th minute. He earned his brace in the 50th minute when he scored from the spot kick.
Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma handled the ball, leaving Libyan referee Ibrahim Mutaz without a choice but to award Gabon a penalty, which Aubameyang converted.
A minute past the hour mark, Olunga scored for Kenya after he connected to a cross delivered by Ouma.
Kenya finally fell to Gabon, who are now top of Group F, as they returned to Nyayo Stadium for a competitive game for the first time since September 12, 2023, when they hosted Rwanda for a World Cup qualifier.
Four games remain in the qualifiers, and Harambee Stars are set to face Gambia and Seychelles in September.
