Volleyball: Kenya U20 to face North African giants in semifinals
The Kenya U20 has been drawn against Egypt as the race for the U20 African Volleyball Championship enters the crucial last four.
A statement from the Kenya Volleyball Federation has confirmed the competition’s host as the next opponent for Kenya.
The high-stakes fixture pitting the two will be played this Friday, September 19, 2025, from 5:00 pm.
Uganda vs Cameroon
The clash against the fancied host will see Kenya seek to make it to the final as they seek to emulate their female counterparts who clinched the title in the girls’ edition staged on Camerroon in August.
The other clash will see east African Neigbours Uganda play against Cameroon who emerged as the pool winners from Kenya’s Group B.
The draw comes after Kenya sailed through into the semifinals of the CAVB U20 championship in Egypt, after a 3-1 win over Algeria.
Luke Makuto’s team opened their campaign on a losing note, slumping to a 3-1 in sets against Cameroon on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
The team regrouped to beat Morocco in their next clash, edging the North Africans on 26-24, 30-32, 25-20, and 25-21 set wins, to remain afloat in the continental games.
Kenya took charge late on in the clash as a straight serve found itself on the edge of the line for a one-point win in the set.
The young guns took the gained advantage in stride to seal the set on a 26-24.
Impressive blocking
The second set produced nail-biting drama as the team just fell short of an impressive fightback. A moment of erratic defending saw the team slump to an 18-22 deficit.
However, despite showing off crawling back with tremendous blocking off the net, the North Africans bagged the set on a 32-30 score.
First win
The charges kept their cool to claim the subsequent sets and clinch their first victory in the championship.
The young guns then edged Rwanda on a similar score line to advance from the classification stage on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The host team has enjoyed a good run in the U20 Nations African championship, beating Uganda 3-2 in the group stages.
They also eliminated Rwanda in the quarterfinals after a 3-1 victory.
The continental championship also doubles as a qualification path for the 2026 U21 World Championship.
