Volleyball: Kenya beats Morocco to stay afloat in African U20 championship

Kenya U20 men’s volleyball team mounted a battling performance to remain in the ongoing African volleyball championship in Egypt with a 3-1 win over Morocco on Monday, September 15, 2025.

Luke Makuto’s team, who lost their opening game to Cameroon, regrouped and delivered when it mattered with 26-24, 30-32, 25-20, and 25-21 set wins, assuring them of a further stay in the continental games

Following a highly contested open set, Kenya took charge late on as a straight serve found itself on the edge of the line for a massive 24-23 advantage.
The young guns took the gained advantage in stride to seal the set on a 26-24.

Impressive blocking

The second set proved to be all in serving a fierce battle and nail-biting drama as the team just fell short of an impressive fight back. A moment of erratic defending saw the team slump to an 18-22 deficit.

However, despite showing off crawling back with tremendous blocking off the net, the North Africans bagged the set on a 32-30 score.

First win

The charges kept their cool to claim the subsequent sets and clinch their first victory in the championship.

Meanwhile, Cameroon took a strange hold of the group after defeating Rwanda in the other group clash pitting the west Africans against the Kigali boys.

The latter fell to a three-set straight defeat of 17-25, 22-25 and 27-29.

Makuto and Gideon Njine’s boys were left rueing a slow start against the burly West Africans, losing the first set by six points.

The team, however, regrouped to mount a spirited comeback in a narrow 29-27 victory before Cameroon snatched the third by 25-21.

Kenya’s struggles in the final set, however, proved decisive in deciding the battle.

Kenya will next face Rwanda in their final Pool B clash, with a win set to assure the team of progression to the next rounds.

The Rwandese, who slumped to a thrilling 3-2 in the opener against Morocco, are staring down elimination after back-to-back defeats.
