Tusker beat Sofapaka to pile pressure on Gor Mahia
A second-half brace from winger Ian Simiyu earned Tusker FC a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Sofapaka in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League fixture at the Kasarani Annex on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
The win took the Brewers to second in the standings, leapfrogging struggling Gor Mahia FC, with 21 points in 13 outings. Simiyu, handed a start after the departure of Curtis Wekesa, returned the favour in kind with two brilliant goals to seal the victory and guide the team to a third win in a row.
Simiyu shines
The winger scored the opener in the 70th minute when he did well to make a run on the right before squeezing the ball between the keeper’s legs from a tight angle. Eight minutes later, he doubled the scoring with his third goal of the season.
The winger picked the ball just inside the box after Dennis Oalo had dummied Eric Kapaito’s cross to throw the defense off balance, picked his spot, and struck home. Just before the opener, Tusker should have had the first goal when Charles Momanyi connected to Simiyu’s free kick at the back post. Despite the defender clearly hacking the ball away over the line, the assistant referee turned a blind eye.

But justice would be served less than five minutes later, with Simiyu scoring. And, more chances came flowing. Immediately after the second goal, Kapaito once again showed his prowess, weaving away from his man on the left before striking from a tight angle, but the keeper saved. Oalo raced to the rebound but saw his effort blocked at point-blank.
Turning it around
The Brewers had upped the tempo in the second half, after a slow start to the game. Just seven minutes after the restart, Cliff Oruko had a golden chance to score his first goal of the season when he ran behind the defence to pick up a through ball, but he failed to place the ball on target with only the keeper to beat.
The hosts were limited in opportunities, save for a late effort that was well collected by keeper Brandon Obiero, who kept his third clean sheet of the season. The match also marked another landmark for Tusker FC, with youth team graduate Douglas Omanga coming in for his debut with 10 minutes to play.
Omanga could have marked his debut with an assist when his industry on the left accorded him space before floating a cross to Kapaito. However, the striker’s strong header evaded the target by a whisker.
The Brewers now regroup before their next assignment on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, against newly promoted Nairobi United
