AFC Leopards players and officials were held hostage for several hours by their irate fans after suffering a 3-2 FKF Premier League defeat against Nairobi City Stars at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

Immediately the referee blew the final whistle, the fans accosted the players accusing them of lacking passion to play for the team, and went further to demands for answers after the team lost their fourth fixture in the top-flight this campaign.

Simba wa Nairobi took a deserved lead through Vincent Owino in the 31st minute, Samuel Kapen added the second in the 41st minute before Robinson Asenwa scored the third in the 61st minute. Brian Yakhama scored for Ingwe in the 82nd minute and Victor Otieno added the second but it was too late to salvage something from the game.

It needed the intervention of police drawn from the Kasarani area to quell the situation as they were forced to throw tea gas canisters at the fans. Two fans were seriously injured and rushed to hospital. A top Ingwe official, who did not want to be named, condemned the incident insisting it was unnecessary for the fans to vent their anger on the players and the officials.

“We know we are struggling, we know the results have not been good enough but the fans should not react the way they did, I think there are many ways to pass a message if they are not happy than causing mayhem and trying to beat up the playing unit,” the official told People Sports.

The latest defeat left Ingwe in position 15 of the 18-team table with eight points from 10 matches. They have managed one win, drawn five, and lost four. Meanwhile, the victory propelled City Stars a place above Tusker and are now 11th on the log with 12 points.

Elsewhere, Sofapaka failed to make it two wins out of two after suffering a 3-0 defeat against FC Talanta at Machakos Stadium. Batoto ba Mungu went into the fixture having demolished KCB 3-0 and they were looking to keep the winning run going but Talanta had other ideas as goals from Augustine Kuta, Danson Kago and Kevintom Machika gave them the resounding victory in the away contest.

“We knew how difficult it was going to be against Sofapaka but my players did well to play as per my instructions,” said Talanta coach Ken Kenyatta, adding: “We had to close them down because they use their wings a lot and it helped us to move forward and score the goals.”

Talanta have moved to the fourth spot with 15 points while Sofapaka remained at the bottom with seven points. At the Sudi Stadium, Nzoia Sugar grabbed maximum points after a 90th-minute goal courtesy of Emmanuel Osoro earned them a 1-0 victory against Kariobangi Sharks.
