Shabana coach resigns, but patron Nyamweya refutes claims
Despite announcing he had resigned as Shabana FC coach following the team’s 4-0 FKF Premier League defeat against Ulinzi Stars on Sunday, club Patron Sam Nyamweya has maintained Sammy Okoth is still the coach of the side.
In the fixture at Ulinzi Complex, the Kisii-based Glamour Boys suffered their worst defeat of the season after goals from Bonaventure Muchika, Mark Bikokwa, and Enosh Ochieng, who grabbed a brace, earned the Soldiers a deserved victory. At the final whistle, agitated Shabana fans besieged the team’s technical bench demanding answers and calling for Okoth to resign.
Speaking afterwards Okoth confirmed he had thrown in the towel and called on the club’s top management to get a new coach to handle the side.
“I am not okay with whatever happened, I just feel I should let it go at the moment, I should just relax and maybe let someone else come and do the job because 4-0 is a defeat that I have never ever gone through since I started my career as a coach,” Okoth said, adding: “I feel that is the right thing to do at the moment (resign) because this is a team that has a lot of crowds and they deserve much better than what happened against Ulinzi Stars.”
He continued: “I am proud of what I have done ever since I got into this team, I think they also know what I have done to the team, assembling the team, getting promoted, so I just leave feeling proud that they gave me the opportunity to handle the team and I have done all that I felt was right for the team.”
However, Nyamweya issued a statement saying Okoth will continue in his role as the head coach and will be preparing the team for Wednesday’s ‘Nyanza derby’ against Gor Mahia at Kasarani Stadium.
“Shabana coach Sammy Okoth has not resigned but he is contemplating resigning if he is not given a contract, FIFA and CAF don’t allow a coach to work without a contract and this may lead to Shabana being fined millions and burying all their fortunes they have made over the years,” said Nyamweya, adding: “Okoth will remain the coach as we sought his contract issues and he will be in charge when we face Gor Mahia on Wednesday.”
Nyamweya further defended Shabana players despite the heavy defeat insisting they will bounce back against K’Ogalo. The defeat left Tore Bobe in position 16 of the 18-team table with seven points from eight matches. They have managed one win, drawn four, and suffered three defeats.
