Posta Rangers coach John Kamau has attributed the team’s blistering start to the 2023-24 FKF Premier League campaign to patience from the top management.

The Mailmen have registered their best-ever start to the top-flight as they currently sit top of the 18-team table with 16 points from six matches, four more than champions Gor Mahia. Apart from being unbeaten alongside K’Ogalo, they are also in a run of five straight wins which started on matchday two when they gunned down Kenya Police 3-0 at Police Sacco Stadium on September 1.

With the league taking a break to pave the way for the FIFA international break where Kenya’s Harambee Stars will play Russia in a friendly set for Turkey on October 16, Kamau believes the decision by the club’s top hierarchy to stick with him even when the team was struggling in the last campaign, has started to yield fruits.

“What we lack in Kenyan football is patience, it is something we don’t have respect for at all, not every coach can get the time I was given by Rangers to build the team I am handling now,” said Kamau, adding: “Now you see because of the trust they (bosses) kept in me and gave me space to do my job, they have started to see the dividends.”

The former Harambee Stars assistant coach continued: “Any top coach needs time to put up his ideas with the players, it is a process for any coach to come up with a good team if he doesn’t get enough time and support of those in charge, and the big problem we have in Kenya, we don’t give our coaches enough time to build whatever they find in a team.”

Asked about the strength of his side so far in the league, Kamau said: “We are doing very well in terms of building out our play from the back and what makes me even happier is because my players are enjoying every bit of how we are playing and they are expressing themselves on the pitch.”

Rangers kicked off their season with a 0-0 draw against Bidco United before they recovered to beat Police 3-1. They went ahead to beat Sofapaka 3-1, promoted Murang’a Seal FC 1-0, Kariobangi Sharks 1-0, and Nzoia Sugar 2-0 in their last assignment last Friday.

When the league resumes after the FIFA break, Posta Rangers will return to action with a game against FC Talanta at Ruaraka grounds on October 21, before they travel to face Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium on October 29.
