Harambee Stars defender Johnstone Omurwa made his long-awaited debut in the Primeira Liga for his club Estrela da Amadora against Benfica on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

However, Omurwa’s debut ended on a sour note as Estrela da Amadora lost 2-0 to the Portuguese giants. Goals from Casper Tengstedt and Rafa Silva ensured the Primeira Liga champions emerged winners in their second league game of the season.

Omurwa, a former Wazito FC star, did not feature in the opening game against Vitoria Guimaraes, which Estrela da Amadora lost 1-0. In the game against Benfica, the Kenyan played for the entirety of the match.

Winless Estrela da Amadora

Omurwa and his club teammates have to fight hard and ensure they get their season flying, as they are currently without a point or a goal given that they have lost the opening two games.

They will play Estoril on Friday, August 26, and will perhaps be under immense pressure to get a win after disappointing results in the previous games.

Omurwa joined the Portuguese club in July, after the team had just been promoted to the top flight. This is Estrela da Amadora’s first appearance in the Primeira Liga, and that means the Harambee Star is at the club at a very important juncture in their history.

Harambee Stars’ focus

Omurwa would be keen to have a far more successful outing with Estrela da Amadora in order to avoid the setbacks he faced during his stints with Israeli club Sektzia Ness Ziona FC, where he had unsuccessful trials.

While his focus is firmly on club duties, he is hopeful to be called up for Harambee Stars’ future assignments. The 27-year-old has made 11 appearances for the national team since making his debut in 2019.

Ahead for Harambee Stars are Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers, which they are keen to impress and grab tickets to.
