Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga is on course to become the new all-time top scorer for the country after notching a brace in Kenya’s win over Seychelles on Tuesday, September 9, 2026, in a World Cup qualifier clash.

The brace moved the Al Arabi striker level with Dennis Oliech on 34 goals in the Harambee Stars’ all-time scoring chart and placed him just one goal shy of the all-time top scorer, William Ouma.

The talismanic Kenyan football legend of the 1970s boasts the record of the all-time lead scorer with 35 goals.

Olunga scored his 31st goal and the first of the Benni McCarthy era in the ongoing World Cup campaign in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Gambia.

Road to 34

The evergreen attacker stepped up to convert the penalty, setting up a spirited fight from Harambee Stars that salvaged an important point away.

He continued his streak by notching his 32nd goal in a 2-1 loss to Gabon in Nyayo National Stadium in March 2025.

Meanwhile, as per the records, Ouma, who featured for Harambee Stars from 1965 to 1977, leads in the goal haul for the national team.

William Ouma’s record

The former Gor Mahia and Luo Union striker enjoyed a rich vein of goal-scoring form, attaining the 35-goal haul in 66 appearances in a time spanning 15 years.

His last goal for the national team colours came around 1977, when he marked his final appearances for the Harambee Stars under coach Ray Wood.

On the other hand, Oliech’s record had stood since 2015, when the striker called time on his international career, before Olunga matched it, a decade later.

Thrust onto the international scene as a youngster from Mathare United, Oliech marked his national team debut in 2022, going on to etch his name in Kenya’s football folklore.

Among his outstanding performances is his long-range strike against Cape Verde that earned Kenya a berth in the AFCON 2004 games.

Famously known as the ‘Menace’ for his knack for terrorising defenders, Oliech enjoyed prolific stints in France’s top tier with AJ Auxerre, AC Ajaccio, and FC Nantes.

Olunga, now, has his sights on the coveted record as he seeks to lead the exclusive club of the country’s most iconic goalscorers in the history of the competition.

At the club level, the poacher boasts of being the all-time top scorer for the Qatari club, Al Duhail, whom he left at the end of May 2025, having netted an impressive 130 goals.
