Mombasa United to reinforce ahead of new season, CEO Arunga reveals
As preparations for the new National Super League (NSL) season intensify, Mombasa United has shifted its recruitment strategy towards seasoned players with a proven track record in the league.
According to the club’s Chief Executive Officer Nick Arunga, the coastal side is determined to bring in battle-hardened talent to improve squad depth and on-pitch maturity. The focus will be on acquiring players who have previously featured in the NSL or higher-tier competitions. This recruitment model is aimed at boosting the team’s chances of promotion to the FKF Premier League, according to Arunga.
Furthermore, the CEO noted that last season’s struggles stemmed largely from a youthful and inexperienced lineup that lacked depth, especially when key players were unavailable. To address that gap, the club plans to revamp its roster by offloading several current players and signing more reliable and tested individuals who can guide the team through the challenges of a demanding season.
Inside plan
“We had a very good side last season. The problem we had was in the substitution because we lacked sufficient depth in some areas. We are going to add depth to the current squad by signing players who have proven themselves in the NSL and even beyond,” Arunga said.
With the club barely surviving relegation in the previous campaign, the emphasis is now on creating a more balanced team that blends youth with seasoned professionals. The upcoming signings are expected to play a crucial role in helping Mombasa United achieve its promotion dream.
”Our main target is to play in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League as the second team from the coastal region alongside Bandari. This season, we are expecting a lot from the team. We are planning to bring in a new coach as well to help us register better results. We picked up a lot of important lessons last season, and now we want to get it right by making significant adjustments. The target is to finish on top of the National Super League table and play in the Premier League,” Arunga added.
After a challenging campaign, Mombasa United settled for 16th place on the NSL log with 37 points in 35 outings in the country’s 2024/25 football season.
