Mashemeji Derby faces postponement over venue unavailability
The fate of the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby pitting Football Kenya Federation Premier League eternal rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards hangs in the balance after confirmation that Nyayo National Stadium will not be available.
Venue changes
Initially, the official date and venue for the first leg of the 25/26 Mashemeji Derby were slated for Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The change in date and venue came from the fact that Nairobi United is set to use the Kasarani facility for their 25/26 CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage clash against Democratic Republic of Congo outfit AS Maniema Union.
After Kasarani Stadium was booked, Nyayo Stadium became an alternative, but the venue has been reserved by State House for the Monday, December 1, 2025, World AIDS Day national ceremony, with preparations scheduled to begin as early as Saturday.

The development, communicated to football officials earlier this week, has thrown the FKF Premier League’s most iconic fixture into uncertainty. With Nyayo now fully locked out for logistical preparations, organisers are left exploring two uncomfortable options: postponing the derby or relocating it to an alternative venue outside Nairobi.
More than a game
The Mashemeji Derby, contested between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, is more than just a football match; it’s a cultural pillar of Kenyan sport, drawing thousands of fans, heavy media coverage, and significant commercial interest. Traditionally, hosting the tie in Nairobi has ensured maximum attendance from both sets of supporters. A move outside the capital would significantly alter the experience and could even raise security and logistical concerns.
It is understood that discussions with the Football Kenya Federation and league officials are ongoing, with hopes of reaching a solution that preserves the derby’s stature. However, with only days remaining, the window is quickly narrowing.

Fans of both AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia (often referred to by their nicknames, Ingwe and K’Ogalo, respectively) recognise each other as arch-rivals. As of 2025, Gor Mahia has won the Kenyan Premier League a record 21 times, while Leopards have 12 league titles to their name, making the two bigwigs the most decorated clubs in Kenyan football.
Ahead of the fixture, both sides dropped crucial points in their last league outings. AFC Leopards were held to a 1-1 frustrating draw by Kariobangi Sharks on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium, while Gor Mahia were trashed 4-1 by struggling APS Bomet on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Nyayo National Stadium.
