Mashemeji Derby: AFC Leopards hold Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia and their traditional rivals AFC Leopards have shared points following a 0-0 Mashemeji Derby draw at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
K’Ogalo will head home disappointed given the number of chances wasted, while Ingwe will feel proud for avoiding another defeat at the hands of their rivals.
Meanwhile, Shariff Musa’s shot in the 28th minute, which was Gor Mahia’s first realistic chance, was stopped by AFC Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo, who had no problem collecting it.
Boniface Munyendo failed to score for the home side three minutes after the half-hour mark. He received a good pass from Samuel Semo, but he failed to get the ball in the back of the net with his effort going over the bar.
Ingwe’s Musa Oundo was yellow carded in the 40th minute for his rough challenge on Gor Mahia’s Lawrence Juma.
As the second half began, the coaches made changes with Fred Ambani bringing on Victor Otieno for Ovella Ochieng in Leopards’ substitution. Gor Mahia’s Sinisia Mihic, on the other hand, brought on Samuel Kapen for Sylvester Owino.
Meanwhile, Musa failed to break the deadlock in the 51st minute when he could not score at close range even though he was unmarked.
More changes for both sides were made as the game progressed past the hour mark. Ronald Sichenje came on for Maxwell Otieno for Ingwe’s substitution while Musa was withdrawn for Austin Odhiambo.
With 10 minutes to go, Ambani made more changes, bringing on Victor Omune and experienced Kevin Kimani for Kelly Madada and Hassan Beja.
Another chance for K’Ogalo to break the deadlock was wasted in the 86th minute when Odhiambo could not beat Opiyo. With a clear-cut chance, the former AFC Leopards midfielder missed from close range after he was impressively picked out by Stanley Omondi.
The former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, and Governors Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi and Siaya’s James Orengo attended the 96th Mashemeji Derby.
