National women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers are eyeing a good outing at the  African Women’s Volleyball Championship set for September 10 in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

Head coach Paul Bitok says the team that made a return to the Olympics since the Athens Games in 2004 is in good shape ahead of the continental assignment.

Malkia Strikers are currently fine tuning their play at the Nyayo Gymnasium and will jet out of the country on September 8 ahead of the 16-team championship serve off.

Bitok says once again west African side Cameroon will be the country to watch in the championship, but says Kenyan ladies will be going for their  unprecedented tenth crown.

The Cameroonians have dominated the African scene since 2017, when they defeated Kenya 3-0 in the final to bag their maiden title. That victory was achieved in their Yaoundé backyard.

“We take pride that while Cameroon has dominated  at the Africa championships, we have managed to beat them in three recent meetings including the African Games as well as the Olympic qualifiers,” said Bitok.

Since Bitok took over in August 2019, Kenya has reclaimed her reputation as Africa’s top dog in the sport winning the African Games title and also returning to the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004 — both at the expense of Cameroon.

“The mission is very clear. The girls know the experience we gained in Tokyo will come in handy.

We Want to end Cameroon’s run and reclaim the biennial championship title which Kenya last won in 2015 when it was held in Nairobi,” he added.
