Lydia Akoth acknowledges praises from fans after Yanga derby win

Harambee Starlets and Yanga Princess midfielder Lydia Akoth has registered her appreciation for the love showed since her switch from Kenya to Yanga Princess.
Akoth joined Yanga Princess at start of the year from KWPL side Police Bullets FC, where she concluded the season on a high as the league’s reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP).
She wasted little time in settling to life in the Tanzania League.
The midfield enforcer bagged his maiden silverware in March with the crowning of the Samia Women Super Cup 2025.
She was again the subject of praise on Tuesday, March 18, tie as Yanga Princess came up clutch in the Kariakoo women’s derby with a 1-0 win over rivals Simba Queens.

Speaking to the club portal after the game, Akoth disclosed that teamwork was key in upsetting their opponents.
“It has been a tough game but we worked as a team. We stuck to the coach’s instructions and played as unit leading to the goal and the victory,” she said.
With the win, Yanga put an end to a spate of poor run against their arch rivals with Akoth left to savour her dream debut to the highly contested derby.
Maiden derby win
“I’m happy to be part of the winning side in such a huge clash. We continue to work and stretch the winning run to other games,” she pledged.
The Ex- Police Bullets vowed to stretch her impressive run in reciprocation of the love from the Green and Gold.
“It’s a big motivation for me as a player. I have to return the favours to the fans who have been massive in their support. I’m thankful for them and I promise to give more entertainment,” she said.
Akoth vs Starlets teammates
Tuesday’s clash pitted Akoth against several of her compatriots plying their trade with Simba Queens but she emerged as the one with the last laugh.
The Msimbazi ladies had goalkeeper Winfrida Ceda, defender Ruth Ingosi, Wincate Kaari, Corazone Adhiambo and Jentrix Shikangwa all starting for the clash.
While Elizabeth Wambui is on the bench for the Queens.
