Over 190 Gen-Z protesters freed on Ksh1K cash bail each
A Milimani Court has freed over 190 gen-z protesters on Ksh1,000 cash bail each after they have denied the charge of obstructing vehicles on road contrary to section 58(c) of the Kenya Roads Act 2007.
According to the charge sheet, the protesters with others not before the court are accused of unlawfully heaping stones and burning tires along Jogoo road on June 25, 2026, causing obstruction to road users
“On June 25, 2026, at around 9:50 am along Jogoo road in Makadara Sub-County within Nairobi County jointly with others not before court, you unlawfully obstructed vehicles on the road by heaping stones and burning tires on the said road thereby causing obstruction to the road users in contravention of the said Act,” part of the charge sheet reads.
“On June 25, 2026 at around 1200hrs along Landhies Road in Kamukunji Sub-County within Nairobi County, jointly with others not before court, you unlawfully obstructed motor vehicles on the road by heaping stones and burning tyres on the said road thereby causing obstruction to road users in contravention to the said Act,” another count reads.
The protesters who have been represented by Senior Counsel James Orengo, former Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino among other lawyers.
Senior Counsel Orengo urged the court to release the accused persons on a personal bond.
He told court that he was willing guarantee them and ensure they will appear in court for the case.
“Your honour, we ask you to release all the accused persons on personal bond I will ensure all them attend court,” Counsel Orengo submitted.
“I can personally guarantee them your honour,” Senior Counsel Orengo added.
However, the DPP through counsel Victor Owiti opposed the defence application stating that the accused in persons are a flight risk.
The court heard that the accused persons are places of abode are not well known and the the bond will ground them to attend court.
Magistrate Nyangena has granted the accused persons on Ksh1,000 each.
The matter will be will be mentioned on July 2, 2026 for pre-trial directions.
