ODM welcomes bid to honour Raila in Nairobi CBD
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has backed a motion before the Nairobi City County Assembly seeking to honour the late Raila Amolo Odinga with a monument in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Friday, June 26, 2026, the party welcomed the proposal sponsored by Nairobi West Ward MCA Rex Omolleh, saying it fully supports the initiative.
“We appreciate Hon. Rex Omolleh MCA for Nairobi West Ward for tabling a motion in the County Assembly of Nairobi that seeks to immortalise our founding father, the Late Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, in the Central Business District (CBD) of the great Capital City of Kenya, Nairobi. This is a welcome move that needs to be supported by all. As a party, we are fully in support.”
The motion, titled “Establishment of a Monument in Honour of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH,” was listed for debate during the Nairobi City County Assembly sitting on June 24.
Assembly approves amendment
According to documents from the County Assembly, the motion recognises Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic development and public service.
It cites his role in the struggle for multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms and governance, as well as his service in government, including his tenure as Minister for Roads and Public Works.
The proposal also highlights infrastructure projects initiated during his time in office, including the Thika Super Highway, Eastern Bypass and Southern Bypass.
During debate, Omolleh proposed an amendment to relocate the monument from Uhuru Park to the Supreme Court Roundabout. The amendment was adopted before the motion was approved by the Assembly on June 24.

Concept designs accompanying the proposal show a statue of Raila in a waving pose overlooking the Supreme Court precinct.
The inscriptions describe him as “A Monument to Democracy” and “Father of the Second Liberation,” while the base carries the dates 1945–2025 and the quote: “It is the people who must make their own decisions about their future.”
Part of national tributes
The proposed monument adds to a series of tributes made in honour of Raila following his death on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in India.
A State funeral was held at Nyayo National Stadium before his burial in Bondo, Siaya County, after thousands of Kenyans viewed his body in Nairobi and Kisumu.

He was also posthumously awarded the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.), the country’s highest civilian honour, during the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Other initiatives undertaken in his honour include the establishment of an official RAO Tribute Portal and the allocation of government funding for the construction of a national monument.
Symbolic location
If implemented, the monument will be erected at the Supreme Court Roundabout in Nairobi’s CBD following the Assembly’s approval of the amendment.
The proposed site is located near key national institutions, including the Supreme Court and Parliament buildings.
ODM said the proposal is a fitting tribute to its founding leader and called for support for the initiative.
The monument, once completed, will become one of the permanent public memorials recognising Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s political history, democratic reforms and public service.
