NAIROBI: Kenya Rugby Football Union (RFU) has co-opted Iron Lady Peris Mukoko Wanyaga to take charge of women’s rugby affairs in the country.

The development comes even as the Union defined the roles of the three directors elected last month in compliance with the 2013 Sports Act.

The board is headed by Gangla Oduor who is the chairman assisted by the newly elected vice chairman Moses Ndale and with Ian Mugambi being deployed as the secretary.

According to independent reports at KRFU, the board has amicably resolved to settle for Wanyaga as the director of women’s rugby due her vast knowledge in the game. The new face in the board is Leslie Mwangale of Stingers RFC who is tasked with spearheading the league and fixtures department.

Mukoko remained in the director’s office after losing to former director and current vice chairman Moses Ndale in the recent elections.

On the other hand, former sit-in vice chairman Kikechi Kombo who held the vice-chairperson’s office for two months will headline the development role.

Kombo was appointed by the office to act as the sit-in official pending the elections that were postponed by the Registrar of Sports Rose Wasike largely due to non-compliance of the sports act by rugby clubs in Kenya. Through a statement by the Union on Monday, Mukoko, a former Lioness star, was co-opted to serve in the board as one of the two major changes alongside the appointment of fellow director Leslie Mwangale.

“Following the recent elections during the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) annual general meeting, the board has appointed Leslie Mwangale as the Director of Leagues and Fixtures. The board has further co-opted Peris Mukoko-Wanyaga who will serve as the director of women’s rugby,” read the statement.

After being entrusted by the board to hold the office of the vice-chairperson courtesy of the constitutional powers by the board to appoint him to sit in pending the peaceful polls, director Kombo is back at the office of the Director of rugby development.

Fellow directors Oscar Mango, Ray Olendo and John Kilonzo will continue serving their roles as the directors of the national 7s and chairman of National squads, fifteens rugby and Commercial respectively.
