KRU mourns Strathmore’s Chano Felix after tragic accident

Kenya’s rugby fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of Strathmore University rugby player Chano Felix, whose passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from teammates, institutions, and fans across the country.

In a statement shared on X on Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) described Chano as a talented young player whose impact on the local rugby scene will not be forgotten.

Chano’s death comes at a time when many Kenyans were ushering in the new year, turning what should have been a season of celebration into one of grief for his family, friends, and the wider rugby community. His journey in the sport, marked by discipline and steady growth, had earned him respect both on and off the pitch.

“Kenya Rugby Union joins Strathmore University, the family, and friends of Chano Felix in mourning his passing,” KRU wrote

According to the statement, Chano succumbed to injuries days after being involved in a road accident, a reminder of how fragile life can be, even for young athletes with promising futures.

“Chano sadly succumbed to injuries on the 2nd January, 2026, following an accident on the 31st December, 2025,” KRU stated

Chano was well known within university rugby circles and beyond. He featured prominently for the Strathmore Leos, where he was admired for his commitment, teamwork, and love for the game. Before joining Strathmore, he had also turned out for Homeboyz RFC, one of the country’s most competitive clubs, further cementing his reputation as a hardworking and dependable player.

“He was a talented rugby player who played for the Strathmore Leos and previously featured for Homeboyz RFC, leaving a lasting mark on the local rugby scene,” KRU posted

His death has left a noticeable gap within the teams he represented, and many young players who looked up to him are struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult and trying time. Rest in Peace, Chano,” the statement reads

The rugby community has rallied around his family, offering support and solidarity during this moment of sorrow.

The Kenya Rugby Union closed its message by reaffirming its support for Chano’s loved ones, as the country remembers a young life gone too soon and a rugby career that, while short, left a meaningful legacy.
