Kenya Rugby Sevens side Shujaa on Sunday, March 23, 2025, departed for Hong Kong ahead of the fifth series of the World Rugby Sevens games.

The series is slated for Friday, March 28 and will run until Sunday, March 30, 2025, with Shujaa pooled in Group C, alongside Spain, Great Britain, and France.

The Kevin Wambua coached team head into the Hong Kong series ranked 9th place in the overall standings with 15 points after enduring a tough outing in the recent tour in Vancouver Canada.

Seeking improvement

The team will be hoping for improved tidings after spending much of their preparations in a residential camp in Nakuru.

In the fourth series, Shujaa lost all their pool matches to the playoffs, ultimately finishing 12th in the tournament standings.

Kenya embarked on their campaign on a false note succumbing to a 24-0 defeat against Argentina.

In their second pool match, Shujaa slumped to a well-drilled France team losing out 33-7.

Despite a slight improvement, Great Britain compounded the group-stage miseries with a 28-10 defeat.

In the ninth-place play-off, a slim 19-14 defeat at the hands of the South American side, Uruguay condemned Shujaa to the 11th-place playoff.

The campaign ended with a 12th-place finish after another narrow defeat to Ireland in the 11th spot play-off.

Squad named

Meanwhile, coach Wambua maintained bulk of his squad that plied the Vancouver trip with George Ooro and Samuel Asati set to lead the team.

William Mwanji, Festus Shiasi and Brian Tanga are among the new faces set to add a new spark to the side after earning nods.

Kenya’s quest will begin on Friday against Spain at the Kai Tak stadium.

The clash will start at 6:39 AM.

The side will face Great Britain on the same day at 9:20 AM before concluding the group phase against France the next day.

Returnees

Kenya reclaimed its place in the World Rugby Sevens Series after seeing off Germany in a 33-15 in 2024.

The return to the big stage along with the big boys has however seen Kenyan on a path of mixed results as they look to regain its form of old.

Shujaa last lifted the sevens title in 2016 in Singapore.
