Kakamega Homeboyz and AFC Leopards back Harambee Stars ahead of their CHAN opener
As the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off, Kakamega Homeboyz FC and AFC Leopards have voiced their full support for the Harambee Stars ahead of their opening Group A match against DR Congo.
The show of solidarity was delivered through a heartfelt message shared on the club’s social media platforms, reading, “From Kakamega Homeboyz to @Harambee__Stars. All the best, Team Kenya, as you begin the CHAN 2024 Championship. Come on, Stars.”
The endorsement from one of Kenya’s most competitive Premier League sides reflects the unity and growing anticipation surrounding the country’s participation in the tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

High-stakes group
Harambee Stars are set to navigate a challenging Group A, facing continental giants including Morocco, Angola, Zambia, and today’s opponents, DR Congo. The tournament marks a historic return for Kenya on the continental football stage, with the pressure and pride of playing on home soil.
Kakamega Homeboyz’s message carries weight not just because of the club’s stature but also due to its strong reputation for nurturing local talent and its close connection with fans in western Kenya. The club has built its legacy on resilience, grassroots development, and a loyal fanbase—values that resonate as the Harambee Stars aim to punch above their weight in the tournament.
Moment of transition
Even as Homeboyz throws its weight behind the national team, the club is undergoing changes of its own. Long-serving goalkeepers’ coach John Waw recently confirmed his departure, joining Tanzanian side Pamba Jiji.
His exit, described as emotional and grateful, came with a farewell note to the club: “Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club, my beloved family. Today, I say goodbye with a heart full of gratitude to this amazing club… I’ve shared immense, unforgettable memories with you, great people.”
Waw reunites with former Homeboyz head coach Francis Baraza in Tanzania, highlighting the growing mobility and collaboration within East Africa’s coaching ranks.
Nation first
The national spirit has also captured the attention of rival FKF Premier League sides. AFC Leopards SC echoed a similar message of support, posting: “Siku zote ni nchi mbele. Nchi mbele siku zote. We wish @Harambee__Stars the best as they kick off their CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign today against DR Congo.”

The unified tone among clubs sets the mood for what is more than just a match—it’s a shared national moment. With fans expected to fill Kasarani Stadium, the Harambee Stars step onto the pitch carrying the hopes of millions and the backing of Kenya’s tight-knit football fraternity.
