Jesse Were: Zambia’s Zesco United announce sensational return of Kenya’s forward
Zambian Super League giants Zesco United have confirmed the return of Harambee Stars forward Jesse Were.
The Kenyan Premier League and Golden Boot winner makes a sensational return to a club where he spent five successful seasons while in Ndola.
Were rejoins Team Ya Ziko after leaving Kansanshi Dynamos, whom he joined after making history with Zesco United.
“Zesco United are delighted to announce the return of Kenyan international star striker and century goal top scorer, Jesse Jackson, from Kansanshi Dynamos Football Club.
“Jesse Were has re-joined the nine-time Zambia Premier League Champions in their tenth title chase up to the end of the 2023/2024 season, and he was unveiled at the Zesco United secretariat in Ndola this morning.
“Welcome back to Team Ya Ziko Jesse Jackson Were, and we wish you another century milestone in your stay at ZESCO,” the club announced.
Were’s Zesco achievements
Zesco United showered praise on Were as they looked back at what they had achieved together before.
“The naturally gifted star striker with a razor-sharp eye for goals, Jesse Were first signed for Zesco United in 2016 from the Kenyan Premier League league side Tusker FC and went on to win four league titles, two ABSA CUP Championships, and two Charity Shield honours for Zesco before his trophy-laden five years at Zesco ended.
“Jesse Were left Zesco United as the all-time record goal scorer and the first player to score 100 goals for Zesco,” the Ndola club added.
After making history with Zesco United and establishing a legendary status, it was time for Were, who has been overlooked by subsequent coaches at Harambee Stars, to go on to shine with Dynamos.
He contributed significantly to Dynamos’ seventh-place finish in the 2021/2022 Super League campaign, and he was the club’s top scorer after netting eight goals and providing six assists for Mabanga Boys.
