It will be purely an African affair in the women’s 800m at the Kip Keino Classic on Saturday at the Kenya cathedral of Sports, the Kasarani Stadium.

Home girl and a fan attraction Mary Moraa will be on the blue track once again to affirm her athletics prowess before the home crowd.

Six years ago, Moraa made a spectacular introduction of herself to the world of global running when she grabbed a silver medal during the World Athletics under 18 Championships on home soil, clocking 53.31, a personal best at that time in 400m.

Since then, Moraa has grown to an international stature in world athletics especially after switching to 800m.

At 22, she has won one diamond league and she is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion over the distance after running magnificently in Birmingham last year.

The Ngong based athlete, under coach Alex Sang has gone ahead to give a rallying call to sports enthusiasts to turn up in large numbers at Kasarani for the event that is promising to have so much in store for all and sundry.

“My aim is to win a gold medal in the Kip Keino Classic this Saturday and also to try and achieve better time.I would like also to urge our fans to come to Kasarani to cheers us up.The gate charges have been waived and your presence will be a morale booster for us to run well,” Moraa told People Daily Sport.

On Saturday Moraa will emerge from the Kasarani Stadium tunnel to go head on with Ethiopian trio of Girma Tigist,Alemu Habitan and Desta Netsanet.

A person of interest among perennial neighbours is 25-year old Alemu Habitan who won a bronze medal in Women’s 800m during the 2018 African Championships in Asaba, Nigeria. Alemu has a personal best of 1:56.71.

Prudence Sekgodiso of South Africa will be eager to give a good show in Nairobi as she looks forward to premier her track season on a high note. The youngster failed to spur in last year’s Commonwealth Games and she was eliminated during the heats.
