Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title contenders Kakamega Homeboyz fell short of their all-conquering form when they fell 2-0 to their ‘sister club’ AFC Leopards in an Ingo Derby at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega yesterday.

Despite still leading the standings, the result was a severe blow to Abana Abeingo who relinquished the lead to the closest challengers in Tusker who were unengaged at the weekend.

Tusker and Homeboyz are joint leaders with 57 points each although the former have a superior goal difference.

For Tusker, the misfortunes of Homeboyz will be all too sweeter for them in pursuit for the title should they beat Bidco United in a penultimate encounter of the season next Saturday.

Homeboyz coach Bernard Mwalala has urged his charges to stand up to be counted if the team is to win its maiden top-tier league title.

“We are devastated. We did not expect it and are going to pick ourselves up moving forward. They (players) need to work hard if we are to lay our hands on the trophy,” said Mwalala.

Homeboyz were almost clueless against Ingwe at Bukhungu and went behind as early as the third minute when Collins Shivachi found an opening to slot the opener.

In the 54th minute, Nigerian Fesenami Olaniyi converted a decent chance for Leopards second and winning goal.

At Kasarani, a 10-man Gor Mahia bravely beat Nairobi City Stars 3-2, thanks to a brace by Samuel Onyango.

Gor played the last thirteen minutes one man less after goalkeeper Gad Matthews received a red card after gathering the ball outside the restricted area and was replaced by Dolph Owino after defender Paul Ochuoga was sacrificed.

Owino, whom Gor sourced from its youth team, would later incur an injury as Gor got inspiration from players sourced from its junior cadres.

However, it was City Stars who made an energized start grabbing the opener through Anthony Kimani before Onyango equalized for Gor in the 43rd minute.

Timothy Ouma then restored Stars lead before Benson Omala replied for Gor followed by Onyango ensured Gor maximum points almost at the death.

In Kasarani, Bidco United caused an upset by beating Wazito 2-0, the first goal coming in the 58th minute.
