Highway look to register history at global games
Highway Secondary are optimistic about rewriting history yet again as they begin preparations for the World School Games slated for early next year in a venue to be announced.
Highway excelled in the just completed FEASSSA games in Arusha, and after returning to the tournament after 40 years, managed to reach the regional finals for the first time. They finished second after falling 2-0 to Buddo Fc of Uganda in the finals.
Highway Secondary school team captain Andreas Odhiambo expressed optimism ahead of the new challenge in the world football tournament.
“We have started our preparations today. We have a friendly match next week on Monday against FKF Division One side Rainbow FC. The morale at the team right is still high. We are following our trainer’s instructions to the letter. We know it’s tough at this stage but everyone knows the opportunity that awaits them if we deliver, “ he stated.
He added, “We have faced some challenges and fought to overcome them. We try to instil the feeling and mentality of winning games. As a team, our goal is to push and rewrite history once again. That’s why we are going to give our best on the world stage.”
Regional tournament
Despite finishing second in the national championship behind Ebwali Secondary, Highway were outstanding in the regional tournament as they upset the 16 time defending champions St. Mary’s Kitende in the semi-finals to book a spot in the finals for the first time since 2016.
They will be part of two teams in each discipline that will represent the region and country in the world school games.
They will be joined by Wiyeta Girls who also failed to clinch the regional title for the sixth time after they were beaten 3-0 by Noa Girls of Uganda.
Kathwanze and Kesogon will represent the country in the volleyball girls category with Cheptil taking part in the boy’s category.
Uganda defended the overall team title after winning 41 medals – 18 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze. Kenya, who last won the title in 2018, were placed second once again with 20 medals: five gold, 12 silver and three bronze.
Rwanda finished third with two gold, two silver and four bronze, as hosts Tanzania wound up fourth with one silver and five bronze medals.
The next edition of the regional tournament will be held next year in Rwanda.
