Gor Mahia sign Harambee Stars defender on 2-year deal
In a major boost to their defensive line-up, Gor Mahia FC have completed the signing of Harambee Stars defender Michael Kibwage on a two-year contract.
The announcement was made on August 12, 2025, signalling the club’s intent to fortify their squad ahead of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) campaign and upcoming continental assignments.
The 27-year-old centre-back joins K’Ogalo from Tusker FC, where he has been a consistent figure since 2023. Kibwage’s inclusion in the Harambee Stars’ squad for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) underlines his growing stature in Kenyan football.

The move comes as Kenya prepares for its debut in the CHAN tournament, and his experience is expected to add steel to the national team’s backline. Images released with the announcement show him wearing the captain’s armband in action, a sign of the leadership qualities he is expected to bring to Gor Mahia’s defence.
Strengthening the backline
Kibwage’s transfer aligns with Gor Mahia’s strategy of signing top homegrown talent, a policy the club has pursued aggressively this year. In March 2025, the record Kenyan champions unveiled six new signings, including three internationals, as part of their squad revamp.

The recruitment drive continued with the recent arrival of fellow Harambee Stars defender Lewis Bandi from AFC Leopards on a similar two-year deal.
The club also reminded fans and critics alike of their existing national team presence, stating, “And just in case they are not so sure, Byrne Omondi, the current Harambee Stars goalkeeper, is a Mahia player.”

The back-to-back acquisition of two CHAN squad members reflects the club’s determination to build a solid defensive unit capable of withstanding the demands of both domestic and continental competitions.
National team boost
The move also comes at a crucial time for Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, who has had to adjust his CHAN squad following the ineligibility of some players due to recent foreign transfers. Kibwage’s continued presence in the local league ensures his availability for the tournament, a boost for Kenya’s defensive options.
With his switch from Tusker to Gor Mahia, Kibwage joins a club steeped in history and supported by one of the most passionate fan bases in African football. The move is widely regarded as a step up in his career, offering him the platform to compete at the highest level in the region.
As the FKFPL season approaches, all eyes will be on Gor Mahia’s reinforced defence.
