AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has linked the club’s resurgence to teamwork, moments after Ingwe grabbed their third consecutive victory (2-0) in the Sportpesa League against Mathare United on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Nyayo Stadium.

Mahiga, Kinyanjui shine

Vincent Mahiga opened the scoring three minutes into the second half before James Kinyanjui sealed the result late on. For Mahiga, it was a rare goal – his first in three seasons and only his second for the club. Kinyanjui’s strike carried personal weight as it was his first goal since joining Leopards from KCB.

The win took AFC Leopards to third on the log with 12 points in six outings, two points behind leaders Kakamega Homeboyz, who have played one match more than Ambani’s charges. Ingwe are also a point behind their arch rivals Gor Mahia, who are placed second in the standings.

”First of all, I thank God for nine points on the bounce; He has done as I wanted. In each and everything, I beleive in progress, the boys have decided to work and they are working, which is very important. We have been working so hard in our training, and patience pays, as does hard work. Getting nine points is not an easy thing; we are very grateful,” Ambani noted.

Ingwe’s slow start

Ingwe started the new campaign on a slow note, drawing their first three fixtures of the season, putting Fred Ambani under immense pressure, and a section of the team’s supporters calling for his ouster. However, AFC Leopards’ wins against KCB, Shabana FC and Mathare United have restored calm at the den.

Meanwhile, Mathare United, the 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions, came undone once again in the Premier League, this time to a rejuvenated AFC Leopards. Just like in the game against Gor Mahia last Thursday, John Kamau’s men conceded both goals in the second half, with Vincent Mahiga and James Kinyanjui capitalising on some lapse in defending.

Speaking on the defeat, John Kamau pointed out the lack of concentration in the defence line. The loss, the Slum Boys’ fourth of the campaign in seven outings, saw them drop to 11th in the standings.
