Five fixtures still uncertain as troubled Premier League approaches climax
Tusker and Kakamega Homeboyz are in a neck-to-neck chase for the 2021/2022 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title amid confusion galore.
The reduced allotment of grants from Sh800,000 teams used to get every month under the disbanded FKF office, to Sh300,000 that was being given by the temporarily appointed Caretaker Committee would later come in piece-meal and curiously, this was the bane of Mathare United’s relegation to the National Super League (NSL) for the next season as the development severely hurt community clubs most of whom rely on well-wishers for sustenance of their activities..
Never mind that Mathare is one of the senior clubs in the country having been founded 28 years ago.
Now, the variance by the FKF Transition Committee, which encompasses the same officials in the Caretaker committee that was entrusted by the ministry to foresee transition in football, seems to have goofed in the true sense of the word.
The season is set to end this weekend and in as much as either Tusker or Homeboyz is set to be crowned the country’s football going by their close numerical data in the league standings, questions are abound to be raised on the validity of the champions elect.
This is weighed on the fact that there are either abandoned or un-played matches that have yet to be determined which begs a question as to whether the Transition Committee under the patronage of the government has an appeals committee in place to make a binding verdict.
With the impending end of the league on Saturday, there are five matches still being contested and a direction is yet to be given by the officials in charge of the league. The match between Sofapaka and Ulinzi Stars that was scheduled for Nakuru ASK Show Ground on March 9, 2022 was called off due to the lack of a well-equipped ambulance.
Ulinzi, who were the home team, were accused of failure to provide a fully equipped ambulance for the fixture and thus stood to forfeit the match.
The ambulance that was to be used by the soldiers was said to have no equipment like a defibrillator which is mandatory before a match is played.
In January this year, Batoto Ba Mungu refused to honour their match against Ulinzi at the ASK Grounds in Nakuru after the latter brought in an ambulance that was ill- equipped.
Another pending issue includes Gor Mahia forfeiting their match against Vihiga Bullets that was abandoned in mid-February following chaos that was perpetrated by the former’s fans even as K’ogalo felt there was no justice by the Normalization Committee.
Further FC Talanta are demanding full points and a reimbursement of close to half a million shillings in form of expenses in their un-played match against Gor Mahia in mid-May in Kakamega after turning up for the fixture against K’ogalo who failed to show up.
FC Talanta declared that they would only take on Gor, who cited lack of overseer to their no show, in the rescheduled match if the Transition Committee reimburses them Sh 421,000 incurred from the trip to Western Kenya.
Another pending match is the one between AFC Leopards and Kariobangi Sharks.
Back to the league diadem, the cup that will be contested by Tusker and Homeboyz has yet to be unveiled neither is the prize money.
Over to you, FKF Transformation committee.
