Impressive Ebenyo leads Kenya’s dominance in Berlin Half Marathon
Kenyans dominated the Berlin Half Marathon as they swept the top five positions with Daniel Ebenyo claiming the win on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
The World Half Marathon silver medalist timed 59:30 as Amos Kurgat and Isaiah Kipkoech took the second and third places, respectively after timing 59:42 and 59:47.
Benard Biwott and Bravin Kiprop finished in 60:21 and 60:29, respectively for the fourth and fifth positions. The seventh and eighth positions were taken by Robert Kiprop and Vincent Kiptoo who timed 61:27 and 61:29, respectively.
Meanwhile, Ebenyo was part of the leading pack that was dominated by his Kenyan compatriots including Kiptoo, Kipkoech, Biwott, Kurgat, and Kiprop.
Ebenyo and Kurgat started to assert their dominance after the eight-kilometre mark as they left behind the others. Finally, Kurgat looked to be unable to challenge Ebenyo who made a decisive run to claim the win.
Although the winner will savour his victory, he would be disappointed not to break the course record of 58:42 that was set by Eric Kiptanui in 2018.
The win on the Berlin course crowns Ebenyo’s previous victories at the 67th Campaccio-International Cross Country and the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country.
Although he did not break the record as anticipated, Ebenyo is satisfied with the general performance of the team.
“Every race is a learning experience, and today was no different. I’m proud of what we achieved as a team and what I achieved personally. The record was on my mind, but it’s all about the win today. We’ll look forward to breaking more barriers in the future,” Ebenyo said after the race.
Ebenyo’s personal best is 59:04 and his main focus is to improve it better in the near future.
Women’s race
Meanwhile, in the women’s race, Muluat Tekle of Ethiopia won after clocking 66:53 and beat her teammate Ftaw Zeray who clocked 67:22. Kenya’s Vivian Kimutai was fourth after timing 68:41.
