Christie 7s rugby: Players, officials handed suspensions after heated matches
The Judicial Committee has reviewed multiple disciplinary cases and handed out sanctions to both players and team officials after the heated Christie 7s rugby tournament staged at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Based on the Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Kenya Rugby Union report, Impala RFC Women’s Esther Juma was shown a red card during her side’s clash with Kenya Harlequins Women. Following the incident, she received a three-week suspension, which in Sevens Rugby equates to missing three matches.
Kabras Sugar’s playmaker Jone Kubu was also summoned before the panel after accumulating three yellow cards across different fixtures. He was handed a one-week ban, effectively sidelining him for one match ahead of the Embu Sevens this weekend.
Meanwhile, Ryan Makaka of MMUST faced disciplinary action after being cited for foul play in their contest against Mwamba. The ruling body imposed a three-week suspension, keeping him out of three upcoming fixtures.
Team officials were not spared either. Catholic Monks Rugby and KCB Rugby team managers were each penalised with a one-match suspension for misconduct.
According to the Kenya Rugby Union, all decisions were made in line with World Rugby’s Sevens disciplinary framework, ensuring fairness and consistency across competitions. The suspensions will remain in effect during the next tournament, the Embu Sevens.
Embu Sevens pools
Meanwhile, rugby fans are gearing up for another action-packed weekend after the pools for the 2025 Embu Sevens were confirmed at the RFUEA Grounds last week. The tournament is scheduled for August 23 to August 24, 2025 and comes at a critical stage with only two legs left in the National Sevens Circuit.
Clubs will be fighting to boost their points tally and solidify their positions on the overall table. Pool A is set to deliver high-intensity clashes as current circuit leaders and double champions this season, KCB RFC, begin their hunt for a third title. The bankers, sitting on 63 points after lifting their eighth Christie crown, will square off against Daystar Falcons, quarterfinalists at Christie, alongside Mwamba RFC and an invited side.
Pool B features the defending Embu Sevens champions, Strathmore Leos, who are second in the standings with 58 points. They will face a stern test against Kabras Sugar, who had a disappointing Christie campaign, crashing out in the group stages to finish ninth. Joining them are newly promoted Kabete Stallions, fresh from a dominant 22–0 victory in the Division Two final over Makueni RFC, plus an invitational team.
In Pool C, Menengai Oilers—currently third with 47 points after a runner-up finish at Christie—will look to maintain their momentum. They are grouped with Nondescripts, Nakuru RFC, and another invited side.
Pool D promises fireworks with last year’s Embu Sevens finalists, Catholic Monks, leading the pool. They will battle Kenya Harlequins, MMUST RFC, and an invitational team in what is expected to be a hotly contested group.
