Kenyan defender Brian Mandela once again linked with Sundowns exit

Kenyan defender Brian Mandela is once again rumored to be departing from South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reports that the center-back is set to exit the club at the end of this month, with his initial deal coming to an end and no extension being offered.

This speculation follows similar reports from the 2023/24 preseason transfer window, during which Mandela was linked with a move to TP Mazembe.

Despite those rumors, he remained with Sundowns amid reports that his contract had expired on June 30, 2023.

There were suggestions that he could potentially be offered a two-year contract if discussions proved successful.

In May, Mandela made history with Mamelodi Sundowns after winning a record-extending Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.

This marked his third PSL title since joining the Pretoria giants, who secured their seventh consecutive trophy by defeating rivals Kaizer Chiefs with a 5-1 victory. However, Mandela did not feature in that match.

The Brazilians lifted the trophy with six games remaining in the 2023/24 season, claiming their 14th overall title.

Mandela has made a total of 61 appearances in all competitions across the domestic league and CAF inter-clubs, and he was even recalled to the national team last year after a lengthy absence on the international stage.

However, during the recently concluded season, Mandela was a bit-part player, featuring in just nine matches, three of which were in the DStv Premiership. Since his move to South Africa, Mandela has made 159 appearances for three clubs, scoring 12 goals.

Sundowns are expected to make a formal announcement when Mandela’s contract officially lapses at the end of the month.
