Mathare United, Kenya’s football community as well as fans across the nation united in sorrow and admiration yesterday as they bid a final farewell to Robert Bob Munro, the legendary founder of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA).

The 78-year-old visionary, who passed away on January 19, 2025, leaves behind an unmatched legacy of community-building through football.

His life was celebrated by family, friends and dignitaries at a moving public funeral service held at PCEA St Andrew’s Church in Nairobi, where tears flowed and tributes poured in for a man who transformed the sport and the lives of countless young players, some of whom have gone on to represent the nation and the world.

The tearful service was attended by family, friends, past and present Mathare United and Mathare United women players, football dignitaries, ambassadors, foreign mission representatives and political figures such as Kerricho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and former Cabinet Minister Dalmas Otieno.

Former Kenya Airports Authority Director General George Muhoho also attended  the event.

Table Tennis Federation president Andrew Maluki, Judo president Shadrack Maluki, former FKF President Sam Nyamweya and former FKF vice-president Doris Petra were also present.

Munro’s body was ushered into the church hall by players and Mathare United officials as the host choir sang a rendition of ‘It Is Well,’ creating an atmosphere of mixed emotions of sorrow and celebration for a life well-lived.

The melodious choir also rendered the hymns ‘How Great Thou Art’ and ‘My Redeemer Lives.’ The sermon was delivered by Reverend Phylis Ochilo, who encouraged the congregation to mirror the deeds of the departed Munro.

Munro was eulogised as a legend of the game who gave his all in developing the community through sport.

Munro’s wife, Ingrid Munro, shared some of the most poignant words about Munro as a family man.

“My husband was amazing. He was able to bring everyone together. It was his passion to create a better environment and community. I have to thank God for giving me so many years with Bob—50 years. He was an amazing man. Even though he has departed, it is only the body that is left, but Bob is with me. I am sorry for everyone who has lost Bob, a wonderful man. Bob is not dead; he will live with us forever.”

Ken Mutiso, a friend Munro met in 2020, read the eulogy and described Bob as “a great friend” who helped him find his purpose in life.

It was revealed that Munro had not seen the inside of a hospital since 1963 and only sought medical attention in 2023 after falling ill.
