The 2022/23 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) premier league season resumed yesterday from the festive season.

The match pitting Gor Mahia and KCB played at Nyayo Stadium was the highlight duel where KCB picked maximum points following a hard-fought 1-0 win.

An earlier K’Ogalo goal was cancelled while the Bankers’ lone goal came against the run of play through Kevin Owino’s effort in the 61st minute.

Following the result, KCB are up one spot to fourth with 12 points from seven matches while the former champions Gor Mahia are down three spots to seventh on the log with 10 points.

It is the first loss for Northern Irish tactician Jonathan McKinstry who is in his first season at K’Ogalo.

K’Ogalo had the likes of George Odhiambo and John Macharia missing key chances even as a surprise exclusion of Benson Omalla on the starting lineup raised eyebrows.

Closely fought contest

On the other end, John Mwangi and Derrick Otieno caused many problems for Gor Mahia in the closely fought contest

Elsewhere, defending champions Tusker FC came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over visiting Vihiga Bullets at Ruaraka Stadium.

This was their sixth consecutive win to keep them at the top of the standings with 18 points. Bullets stunned the hosts with an early goal scored in the second minute of the game to have the Brewers alert.

However, comeback goals from Tusker’s foreign legion of Deogratius Ojok in the 15th minute and David Majak’s 70th minute goal were sufficient to have coach Robert Matano’s season up on the rafters.

Bullets are 16th on the log with two straight losses so far and four matches still in hand.

Nzoia Sugar FC continued to be on song in this campaign so far. The second-placed Sugar Millers got better of Bidco United 1-0 away at Thika Stadium courtesy of a Yassin Sije in the 42nd minute.

The important win means that Nzoia under coach Salim Babu with 16 points have not recorded a loss in their six games played so far.

Meanwhile, Sofapaka FC survived a late scare against FC Talanta to end up with a 1-0 win courtesy of a 25th-minute strike by utility player Ambrose Sifuna.

Batoto ba Mungu dominated in the first half and controlled the ball, especially in the opponents’ territory. Coach David Ouma’s charges were more adventurous up top and close at the back.

In other matches of the day, Mbaraki Stadium witnessed a shocker as visiting Posta Rangers thumped hosts Bandari FC 3-1 as third-placed Kakamega Homeboyz survived by the skin of their teeth in a 1-1 tie with visiting Posta running rings around them in the game.
