APS Bomet promoted to Premier League after chaos rocks NSL clash

APS Bomet FC have secured promotion to the FKF-Premier League after being awarded a 2-0 victory over Kibera Black Stars following the chaos that led to the abandonment of their decisive match at Nairobi’s Jamhuri Grounds.
Points from the match have technically earned the Bomet-based football team a promotion to the Kenya Premier League.
The National Super League (NSL) match was abandoned in the last quarter of the fixture after Kibera Black Stars fans rioted and roughed up Assistant Referee Eunice Njeri to protest an equalising goal from APS Bomet in the 79th minute.
The chaos forced the match officials to call off the game, citing a lack of security to allow it to continue.
Just after APS Bomet’s substitute Philip Wasai equalised, chaos erupted after the home crowd vehemently disputed the referee’s decision that the ball had crossed the line.
Chesara Eusters had given Kibera the lead earlier, but the match was cut short due to crowd disturbances.
In a statement issued later on Saturday, FKF confirmed that Kibera Black Stars FC officials and supporters took part in the protest that caused the match to be suspended.
According to the committee, the security services provided by the host club were inadequate, noting that there were no police officers to provide protection to the match officials.
The incident involved Eunice Njeri, the assistant referee, who was reportedly unable to continue officiating because of safety concerns. The game was formally cancelled as the match officials’ safety was already in jeopardy.
“That the Assistant Referee was left feeling unsafe and unable to proceed, as there was no presence of police officers, highlighting the inadequate security measures put in place by the host club to protect the match officials,” the statement read in part.
Upon reviewing the incident, the committee made the following decision: Kibera Black Stars FC was found to be at fault for the match abandonment; the club will forfeit the match, and APS Bomet FC will be awarded a 2-0 victory and 3 points.
According to FKF, if Kibera Black Stars FC wants to take the case further, they have 21 days to request a detailed ruling.
“Parties may request a detailed decision of this matter to be issued within 21 days upon such a request,” FKF stated in the statement.
