Amputee heroes assemble as Kenya targets CECAAF acclaim

Kenya National Amputee men’s football team has named a provisional squad of 13 players that will embark on intensive training ahead of the upcoming Confederation of East and Central African Amputee Football (CECAAF) tournament in August 2025, in Bujumbura.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon from Homa Bay County, Kenya Amputee Football Federation (KENAFF) Chairperson Benard Ongonda said that while the exact competition dates are yet to be announced, his team is ready to go after head coach Abdalla Otieno named a provisional squad.
“The boys played against the Uganda Cranes and a selected amputee All-Star team at Masinde Muliro University in Kakamega last weekend. Those two games were important to assess their fitness and to identify new talent,” Ongonda said, adding that lack of financial resources and sponsorships is hindering preparations for the team.
Seasoned head coach Abdalla Otieno has selected Timothy Yatini, Hussein Wafula, Stafford Demesi, Aaron Wekesa, George Otieno, Joseph Njoroge, Stephen Ominde, Philip Wanyonyi, Sylvester Masika, Joash Bariti, Johnson Wekesa, Paul Miruka, Edwin Kimurgor, Boniface Omollo and Fredrick Aguk.
Otieno will announce his final list of players once Ongonda secures financial approval from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.
This will allow the head coach to begin early preparations and embark on a talent search in counties beyond Nairobi.
“We have to do well at this regional tournament in Burundi. If we win it, we qualify for the Amputee Africa Cup of Nations. Success at regional and continental levels will not only boost our global ranking but also improve our chances of qualifying for the next Amputee Football World Cup,” Ongonda emphasised.
