All set for the 17th edition of Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru
Rugby enthusiasts in the country are in for another exciting weekend of action in Nakuru this weekend as the city is set to host the 17th edition of the Prinsloo Sevens from Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the Nakuru Athletics Club.
This weekend’s outing will mark the second stop of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit. Launched in 2007, the tournament honours the legacy of South African rugby figure Peter Prinsloo, who played a pivotal role in reigniting the sport’s passion in Nakuru during the 1980s. Over time, it has established itself as a major highlight in Kenya’s rugby sevens calendar.
To cater to the growing popularity and number of competing teams, the men’s competition now features two tiers. Division One is made up of 16 clubs, while Division Two includes 20.
How teams qualify
The line-up for Division One is determined through the following system: the top 12 finishers from the previous leg, Driftwood Sevens in this instance, automatically qualify. The team that topped Division Two in that round also gets promoted. The host club then selects three additional teams to complete the pool of 16.
As for Division Two, the selection process considers four key factors:
Whether a club is officially affiliated with KRU
Proximity to the host location
Recent performance at the Driftwood Sevens
Travel capability and regional representation
Despite receiving more than 50 applications from clubs nationwide, only 20 could be admitted to Division Two, in line with the set criteria. This year’s Prinsloo Sevens promises thrilling action over three days at Nakuru Athletic Club—a venue also marking a century of its history.
At this year’s Prinsloo 7s, hosts Nakuru headline Pool A. They will be joined by Kenya Harlequin, Stallions and MSC Rugby.
Pool B features defending Prinsloo champions Strathmore Leos, who will face competition from Menengai Oilers, Daystar Falcons and Zetech Oaks.
KCB Rugby Club headline Pool C, alongside Nondescript, CUEA and Kisumu. The bankers will be looking to maintain their dominant run in the circuit. Pool D has Kabras Sugar RFC drawn with MMUST, Impala RFC and Mwamba RFC.
