National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Members of Parliament to increase budgetary support for sports development, saying Kenya’s athletic success on the world stage should be matched with stronger investment at home.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Wetang’ula spoke on Sunday during the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run in Uasin Gishu County, where he joined the local community at the invitation of Farouk Kibet, Personal Assistant to President William Ruto.

The Speaker said athletics remains one of Kenya’s strongest identity markers internationally, often elevating the country’s image through global victories.

Wetang’ula celebrated the role athletes have played in carrying Kenya’s flag to major world capitals, where the national anthem has been repeatedly honoured.

“Athletics is, without question, one of our country’s greatest ambassadors. Around the world, in major international capitals, our National Anthem has been played with pride because of the tenacity, determination, and unwavering spirit of our athletes,” the statement reads

He described Kenya as a nation blessed with talent that knows no boundaries, noting that every medal won abroad inspires national pride.

“It is always inspiring to watch our sportsmen and women shine on the global stage. Each victory by our boys and girls fills me with immense pride as a Kenyan,” he said.

Wetang’ula praised the Chepsaita event for providing a platform to nurture runners from various age groups, calling such initiatives key to preserving and strengthening Kenya’s sporting heritage.

“It provides a meaningful platform for nurturing talent across different age groups and strengthening our rich sporting heritage,” he added.

The Speaker used the occasion to urge MPs across the political divide to expand funding for sports programmes, training structures, and youth talent pathways. He said sports development should be seen as an investment with long-term national benefits.

“In my capacity as Speaker of the National Assembly, I urge Members of Parliament to continue allocating more resources to sports. Investing in talent development is investing in our country’s future, and we must remain committed to supporting sporting activities at all levels,” the statement reads

Wetang’ula congratulated the winners of the race, encouraging them to pursue higher goals.

“Congratulations to all the winners. May this victory be the first of many milestones in your athletic journey,” he said.
