Uhuru lands in Uganda to attend Museveni’s swearing-in

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Kampala, Uganda, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Yoweri Museveni following his re-election in Uganda’s January 2026 General Election.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 12, and is expected to attract regional leaders, diplomats, senior government officials, and dignitaries from across Africa.

The office of the fourth president, in a statement shared via X on Monday, May 11, 2026, said that upon arrival in Kampala, the former Kenyan Head of State was received by Ambassador Katureebe Tayebwa alongside Ambassador Kipkosgei Toroitich.

Photos shared from the arrival showed Kenyatta being welcomed by the said officials ahead of the high-profile regional event.

“H.E. President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta, the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya, has arrived in Kampala to join fellow leaders, government officials, and dignitaries for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” the statement reads.

“President @KagutaMuseveni was re-elected during Uganda’s General Elections held on 15th January 2026. The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place tomorrow, 12th May 2026, in Kampala. Upon arrival, Kenyatta was received by Amb. Katureebe Tayebwa alongside Amb. Kipkosgei Toroitich.”

The retired president has remained active in continental affairs through mediation efforts, international forums, and diplomatic missions.

Museveni re-elected in January polls

President Museveni secured another term in office after Uganda’s General Elections held on January 15, 2026.

The veteran Ugandan leader has remained one of Africa’s longest-serving presidents and continues to play a major role in regional politics and East African integration efforts.

His inauguration is expected to bring together several current and former African heads of state.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir is among the African Heads of State who have already arrived in Uganda.

“Uganda warmly welcomes H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, upon his arrival for the Swearing-in Ceremony of H.E. the President-elect, scheduled for 12 May 2026. His presence reflects the enduring friendship, shared history, and strong regional cooperation between Uganda and South Sudan,” the Ugandan State House said in a statement shared via X on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

Azouz Nasri, President of the Council of the Nation of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, also arrived in Kampala with a 10-member delegation, representing Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
