Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday evening, May 11, 2026, attended a state dinner hosted by Yoweri Museveni ahead of the Ugandan leader’s inauguration ceremony in Kampala.

Uhuru’s office in a statement shared via X on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, revealed that the dinner was held at the Speke Resort Convention Centre and brought together heads of state, government representatives, diplomats, and distinguished guests who had travelled to Uganda for the high-profile event.

Regional leaders gather in Kampala

Uhuru joined regional and international dignitaries at the banquet hosted in honour of visiting delegations ahead of Tuesday’s presidential swearing-in ceremony.

“Last evening, H.E. President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta attended a State Dinner hosted by President @KagutaMuseveni at Speke Resort Convention Centre in honor of Heads of State, government representatives, leaders, and distinguished guests ahead of today’s Presidential Inauguration Ceremony in Kampala,” Uhuru’s office stated.

The fourth Kenyan president arrived in Kampala on Monday, May 11, 2026, as part of the Kenyan delegation attending the inauguration following Museveni’s victory in Uganda’s January 2026 General Election.

The inauguration ceremony is taking place today, Tuesday, May 12, and is expected to attract regional leaders, diplomats, senior government officials, and dignitaries from across Africa.

Upon arrival in Kampala, Uhuru was received by Ambassador Katureebe Tayebwa alongside Ambassador Kipkosgei Toroitich.

The retired president has remained active in continental affairs through mediation efforts, international forums, and diplomatic missions.

He has frequently represented Kenya and Africa in high-level international engagements and mediation efforts across the region.

Museveni begins another term

President Museveni was re-elected during Uganda’s General Election held on January 15, 2026, extending his decades-long leadership of the East African nation.

His swearing-in ceremony is expected to attract several African leaders and senior government officials from across the continent.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir is among the African Heads of State who are attending the event in Uganda.

“Uganda warmly welcomes H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, upon his arrival for the Swearing-in Ceremony of H.E. the President-elect, scheduled for 12 May 2026. His presence reflects the enduring friendship, shared history, and strong regional cooperation between Uganda and South Sudan,” the Ugandan State House said in a statement shared via X on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

Azouz Nasri, President of the Council of the Nation of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, also arrived in Kampala with a 10-member delegation, representing Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is also attending.

Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo, Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua, Prime Minister of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Brahim Ghali, President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, and DRC’s Félix Antoine Tshisekedi are also attending.
