Turkana elite hail Ethekon nomination

Turkana professionals have welcomed the nomination of Erastus Ethekon as the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Turkana Professionals Association chairperson Jackson Nakusa said the nomination is not only a significant milestone for Ethekon but an honour to the Turkana community and other marginalised groups.
Nakusa said it reflects commitment to inclusivity, equity and national cohesion, values that are deeply embedded in our constituition.
He said Ethekon is an experienced professional whose leadership is expected to bring integrity and impartiality to the commission.
He said his nomination symbolises a progressive Kenya, professionalism and unity over ethnicity, religion or socio- economic background.
“It dispels long-held myths and affirms that all Kenyans regardless of their background have the capacity to serve in prestigious national positions,” Nakusa said.
Nakusa called on the National Assembly to approve the nomination of Ethekon as IEBC chairperson.
Turkana County Assembly Majority Leader Stephen Edukon said Ethekon’s commitment to upholding democratic principles means he will lead the commission with integrity, fairness and transparency.
“On behalf of the people of Turkana, We convey our heartfelt appreciation to President William Ruto for the historic nomination of Ethekon,” he said.
Edukon said they are confident that under his leadership, the IEBC will enhance the electoral process, fostering public trust and strengthen the commission’s ability to deliver free, fair and credible elections.
He noted that Turkana County, like other marginalised regions in Kenya, has often faced exclusion in key national appointments and therefore Ethekon’s nomination is a victory for the people of Turkana.
Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka last week criticised Ethekon’s pick.
Kalonzo said Ruto failed to consult different political groups, including the opposition, to ensure fairness and inclusivity, before making his choice.
In a post on X, Miguna alleged that the newly nominated IEBC team was “cooked up by Ruto and Raila” to rig the next election.
Ethekon started his career as a programmes’ management specialist at the United Nations Development Programme 2007 to 2015, before switching to a programmes advisor at the UN agency.
In 2018, he was appointed County Attorney at the County Government of Turkana, a position he held for six years.
He holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi and three master’s degrees.
