Political activist and 2027 Borabu MP hopeful Morara Kebaso has accused the government of orchestrating a propaganda campaign against former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party presidential flagbearer Fred Matiang’i.

Kebaso claims state operatives are using fake opinion polls and misleading media reports to pressure the former Interior Cabinet Secretary into launching an early presidential campaign.

In a strongly worded statement shared on social media on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Kebaso claimed that the strategy was designed to exhaust Matiang’i’s resources and political energy long before the 2027 General Election.

“The government propagandists are provoking Dr Fred Matiang’i into rigorous early campaigns to exhaust his energy and resources, using fake opinion polls and fake headlines,” Kebaso said.

He, however, maintained that the said strategy would not succeed, arguing that Matiang’i’s team was carefully planning its political moves.

“We know how scared you are. You are not wrong to fear. We will continue to make calculated and well-planned moves with hammering impact,” he stated.

Matiang’i will be on the ballot

Kebaso, who has recently emerged as one of Matiang’i’s most vocal political allies, insisted that the former Interior CS would contest the presidency despite what he termed sustained attempts to undermine him politically.

“As the election draws near, we will release the fear of God and the terror of the devil. We will roll like a huge stone down the hill. You will run.”

“Tulieni. Matiang’i hafunzwi kazi. Liwe liwalo, he will be on the ballot. And when Kenyans see his name on that paper, they will do the unthinkable,” Kebaso added.

Kebaso did not provide evidence to support his claims regarding government involvement in opinion polls or media narratives.

Growing support for Matiang’i

The remarks come just days after Kebaso publicly endorsed Matiang’i as the opposition leader best suited to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

In recent statements, Kebaso described Matiang’i as “the only one who can fix Kenya”, saying the former Interior Cabinet Secretary possesses a stronger governance record than any other potential presidential contender.

He also pledged to campaign across the country to popularise Matiang’i’s candidature, saying his movement would work tirelessly to secure his election.

Shift to Jubilee Party

Kebaso’s backing of Matiang’i followed his decision to abandon his own political outfit, the INJECT Party, and join the Jubilee Party, which has increasingly become associated with Matiang’i’s political activities.

Explaining the decision earlier this month, Kebaso said the move was informed by political realities on the ground, particularly in the Gusii region, where he argued Matiang’i enjoys overwhelming grassroots support.

He said remaining outside Jubilee would have made it difficult to mobilise voters behind the former Cabinet Secretary effectively.

Opposition succession politics

Matiang’i’s allies have intensified mobilisation across the country, portraying him as a leading contender within the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

His name has increasingly featured alongside those of Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa and People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua in discussions surrounding a possible united opposition ticket.

Kebaso’s latest statement also comes a day after he dismissed reports suggesting divisions within Matiang’i’s political camp, insisting that recent movement of political leaders was part of a deliberate strategy to reposition the campaign rather than evidence of internal wrangles.
